How Saxenda® works?

Saxenda® addresses one of your body’s natural responses to weight loss.
  • Your body naturally produces an appetite hormone known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that helps to regulate your hunger
  • Saxenda® works like GLP-1 by regulating your appetite, which can lead to eating fewer calories and losing weight

Benefits of Saxenda®

You may have lost weight once or many times in the past. But keeping the weight off proved to be difficult. Learn how Saxenda® helped some adults lose weight and keep it off below.
Saxenda® was clinically tested and proven in a study of 3,731 patients in which 85% of people taking Saxenda® lost some weight4. In this study:
3 OUT OF 5 people taking Saxenda® achieved significant weight loss of 5% or more 5,6,7

Which means those patients lost an average of
~5 kg (from baseline body weight)

1 OUT OF 3 people taking Saxenda® achieved significant weight loss of more than 10% 5,6,7

Which means those patients lost an average of
~10 kg (from baseline body weight)

~6% people taking Saxenda® achieved weight loss of 20% or more 5,7

Which means those patients lost an average of
~21kg (from baseline body weight)

4Results are from a 56-week trial of 3,731 adults with body mass index (M) of 27-29.9 with at least 1 weight-related condition, or BMI of at least 30 not including adults with type 2 diabetes. In this study, 2,487 patients received Saxenda® and 1,244 received placebo. Both groups also received a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity counseling. 5For patients taking placebo: 5% or more weight loss was achieved by 34% of patients, 10% or more weight loss was achieved by 15% of patients, and 20% or more weight loss was achieved by 3% of patients. 63 out of 5=62%; 1 out of 3 = 34%. 7Individual results may vary. Saxenda® Dosing Schedule

Your new prescription of Saxenda® contains enough medication for 31 days (for the first month). Below is a simple dosing schedule to guide you from the starting dose of 0.6 mg to the full dosage of 3.0 mg. Keep in close touch with your doctor or nurse support during the first few weeks of treatment initiation, so that any concern(s) may be addressed appropriately early on as you adjust to the treatment.

The dosing schedule is designed to minimize the feelings of nausea you may experience when you first begin treatment with Saxenda®. As you progress towards a higher dose, your body will adjust to the medication and nausea should decrease. Your doctor may adjust your dosing schedule if you cannot tolerate the symptoms. When you reach a dose of  3.0 mg, you will stay on this dosage for the duration of your treatment with Saxenda® or as specified by your doctor.

* Remember to refill your prescription at
the pharmacy, clinic or hospital to ensure you stay
on your treatment schedule

Frequently Asked Questions

A reduced waistline isn’t the only impact of weight loss. Taking off weight and keeping it off may help improve conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Ask your health care provider about Saxenda®. Saxenda® is not indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure or high cholesterol. It is not known if Saxenda® changes your risk of heart problems or stroke or of death due to heart problems or stroke.
Chronic diseases like obesity usually require long-term treatment. Your health care provider will create a plan tailored to your weight management goals. You’ll need to visit your health care provider after you begin taking Saxenda® to review your progress and renew your prescription.
Saxenda® is a once-daily, self-injectable medicine that comes in a prefilled pen. Your health care provider must teach you how to inject Saxenda® before you use it for the first time. If you have questions or do not understand the instructions, talk to your health care provider or pharmacist. See the full Patient Instructions for Use that come with the Medication Guide for detailed information about the right way to use your Saxenda® pen.
Inject your dose under the skin (this is called a subcutaneous injection) in your stomach area (abdomen), upper leg (thigh), or upper arm as instructed by your health care provider. Do not inject into a vein or muscle.
Saxenda® can be taken at any time, independent of meals. Once on Saxenda®, try to take Saxenda® at that time every day, or as prescribed by your doctor.
Store new, unused Saxenda® pens in the refrigerator between 2°C to 8°C. After first use, store in a refrigerator or at room temperature between 15°C to 30°C. Pens in use should be thrown away after 30 days even if they still have Saxenda® left in them. Don’t freeze Saxenda®. Saxenda® that has been frozen must not be used.
After your injection is complete, carefully remove the needle from the pen. To avoid needlestick injury, do not put the needle cap back on the needle. Immediately place the needle in a sharps disposal container to reduce the risk of needlestick injury. Put the pen cap back on your pen after each use to protect Saxenda® from light. Do not throw away used needles in household trash or recycling bins.

Nausea is the most common side effect when first starting Saxenda®, but decreases over time in most people as their body gets used to the medicine. If you do experience nausea, here are some things that may help:

  • Eat bland, low-fat foods, like crackers, toast, and rice
  • Eat foods that contain water, like soups and gelatin
  • Don’t lie down after you eat
  • Go outside to get some fresh air

The dosing schedule is designed to reduce the likelihood of gastrointestinal symptoms. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.
